Artist's Comments

I created this rendered image in January of 1999 - it was the first full-blown 3D scene I'd built in quite awhile. The original rendering's in a much higher resolution than we see here - 3600 by 5700 pixels.

While it's true that I was thinking back to the set of Diner objects we sold through Terra Nova Development, years ago, everything here but the stack of plates is new. That's actually my toaster there on the shelf!

Almost every surface in this scene uses one or more algorithmic textures, and plenty of image maps; textures were a real strength of Impulse's Imagine, the renderer I used.

This "Bee's Knees Cafe" is an imaginary diner, but it incorporates a lot of real details like vintage packaging, postcards, photographs, and fruit crate labels.

Bee's Knees Cafe by ~BWS is a 3d scene with so much detail. you can see the love that was put into this one in every model and even the smallest texture. created and rendered back in 1999, on a 166mhz cpu, you can imagine how long it must have taken to finish it. Astoundingly peachy, and keen as well, simultaneously!
The process involved, and your attention to detail boggles my tiny mind.

:).

The way I remember it, I spent about eleven days modelling and texturing, and then it took 13 days, straight through, to render the picture on a Pentium 166. Yikes.

Wow, this is an incredible render. The attention to detail is fantastic. 13 days is a long ass time.... i'd be terrified of a computer crash or power outage by the end of that one... well worth it though. :)

Nothing matters if I lose my mind.

Whoah!! And a Pentiom166 was the very best cutting edge proc too - jeez, I was still using my 386 10 yrs ago; but I was just doing dorky pixel art with that. Oh, well, that and staying up all night playing RPG nerd games on BBSes.
*gets all nostalgic*

My favorite part in this is the "rest of the kitchen" reflected in the bender-front. I'm drawn to that little buggar for some reason.

I think it's that black and white picture taped to the wall that ties up the whole center of the piece; it cuts the line of sight nicely into the what becomes the foreground.
Also, I find that the same picture is perfectly understated; being it's one of the most important objects there, defining the "life" of the scene.

Wonderful composition! I cant even imagine the amount of time spent on adding in those painstaking details...
