Artist's Comments

Here's yet another print-resolution version of a T-Shirt design I've done for my relaunched Saga Shirts site ( [link] ).

This is a knotwork design that transmogrifies itself into an image of "An Claidhheam Soluis", or "The Sword of Light". Well, okay, parts of it are pretty representational, but other parts - notably the hilt - are really abstract knotwork patterns in the shape of the object.

"An Claidheamh Soluis" itself was certainly the name of a bilingual Irish / English newspaper in the early 20th century, a part of the Celtic Revival movement; it just as certainly was the name of an actual sword in Padraic Colum's wonderful book, "The King of Ireland's Son". But while some will tell you that it was the traditional name for a legendary sword, I'm almost positive that it was not. It just sounds that way, especially to anyone who didn't know that actual legendary Irish swords had names that were a little less metaphysical - like "Retaliator", or "Swift to Hand", for example.

Anyway the paper was a great thing, the Padraic Colum book was a great thing, and here I've made of it a thing of my own.

Wonderful work as always :) I was wondering, do you do the printing for your shirts yourself? I'm still looking for good printing services that can print on colored shirts :)

I'm not a huge fan that "light" behind the sword. It's really out of place as it doesn't look like it's coming from the sword itself. I'd make the sword have a glow about it, that way it looks like it is coming from the sword and not above it.

That wouldn't have worked for technical reasons, since the original design was to be printed on dark colored shirts; the gradient of a glow would have ended up being really unpredictable, and possibly very ugly :).

You have no idea how much you've just helped me out! Printing here in Northern Ireland is....well.... let's say watercolor on a white shirt holds longer in general ;)

Nice celtic knotwork :)
